  • Vote: Best Grilled Cheese In Minnesota? November 3, 2013 11:01 AM

  • " Ahh, the grilled cheese. So simple in its initial set-up, yet so open to the endless possibilities of its willing creator. Of course, there’s the classic — melted American cheese, two slices of bread, and yes, a healthy slathering of butter. But simply mix in a blend of different cheeses and it’s a whole new flavor profile. Or add in vegetables — tomatoes, onion or perhaps avocado? What about layering in basil? Topping it with a fried egg? Whether you’re a purist to the cheese and toast or an adventurous diner, our land of 10,000 lakes is full of options that will satisfy anyone’s craving for the childhood favorite. The grilled cheese has certainly come a long way since its humble beginnings but could you choose just one to deem the best of Minnesota? Take a bite — and vote for your favorite in the poll provided below. And don’t forget to tune in to WCCO 4 News at 10 on Thursday to find out who wins the viewer’s choice. Best Grilled Cheese In Minnesota (Poll Closed) "

Don’s grilled cheese voted best in stateBy kukur on Nov 15, 2013 at 4:24pm – When you’ve got something good in your community, it’s easy to forget it’s there. That might be the case with the grilled cheese sandwich at Don’s Cafe in Morris.Since the sandwich was voted “Best of Minnesota” as part of WCCO’s Viewers’ Choice awards last week, sales of the grilled cheese sandwich have tripled, said owner Marsha Buss.“We’ve had people who hadn’t been here for awhile, either forgot what it tastes like to weren’t prone to ordering it that I think have decided to come in and try it,” said Buss.“It’s gotten a little busier,” concurred Marsha’s son, Michael.Marsha said she learned about the voting last Monday morning, but didn’t think anything of it until WCCO’s Matt Brickman gave her a call on Tuesday afternoon. By that time, Don’s was so far ahead in the viewer poll the restaurant was the clear winner.Brickman and a cameraman arrived in Morris on Thursday around lunch time to talk with patrons and learn the secret of Don’s famous grilled cheese.Marsha said the secret to the sandwich is the restaurant’s grill, which has been used to cook everything from bacon to burgers to grilled cheese for the last 30 years.Michael said the secret is the bread. Marsha and her husband, Greg, bought the recipe for Don’s bread – a key ingredient in the grilled cheese sandwich – when they purchased the restaurant 14 years ago. Greg arrives at Don’s every morning at about 3:15 a.m. to make the 24 fresh loaves of bread each day.Since demand for the grilled cheese has been up, Greg has sometimes had to come in during the afternoon to make a few extra loaves of bread.“It’s a sandwich that’s been made the same way ever since we bought the place, and it was done that way before,” said Marsha. One recent change is an additional slice of American cheese. Patrons also make their own customizations, adding tomato or bacon or chicken or a hamburger. Some people request cheddar cheese, others add fried onions.“People get in a groove, especially the college students,” said Marsha.Vote for your favorite food item/dish at Don's Cafe...

  • "..."My favorite two places to go off-campus are Don's Café and Common Cup. You can get the best burger in town and a shake to go with it at Don's. Or you can get their amazing toast or grilled cheese. Don's is famous for their toast, and eating Don's toast is almost a rite of passage at UMM. Common Cup is a great coffee shop that often has live music and it's also got a great atmosphere to relax after class or to get some studying done." - Julie, 20, junior
"We have wide variety of places to eat in town too everything from the all-American Don's café to Chinese, and Mexican. The local coffee shop and bars bring in music groups to perform on weeknights for everyone not just those of age...

Don's Cafe has the best milkshakes in town. So many flavors to chose from, so little time. The shakes come with enough for two or if your int he mood for leftovers. They keep odd hours, no dinner times during the week, but they're open until 2 am on the weekends. Definitely a college town restaurant. Highly recommended. Great burgers too"

"...What to do at The Weekend
Recalling that Morris is a small town you might wonder what there is to do there. In truth, there is very little. There is one cinema (with just one screen), a 24-hour petrol station/grocery store, a PAMIDA3, and a few fast-food restaurants. The best place to eat is Don's Café, but it has strange hours, and seems to delight in being open only when it will have the least amount of customers possible..."
